Cupcake Chronicles- Will You Be My Valentine?

Ready for the second installment of the Cupcake Chronicles?

Well here goes.....

"Will you be my Valentine?"

Valentine's day is always a big holiday for us because people love that we customize pretty little cupcakes and deliver them throughout NYC (and ship throughout the US).

This past Valentines was no different, we received lots of "Be My Valentine" and "I love you" valentine’s day cupcake orders.

Our business is still in the growing stage so most of the deliveries we make ourselves, and it's always great customer relations when the customer can see the person that they spoke with or emailed about their order.

We received a cupcake order from Linda* (*names have been changed to protect the not so innocent) to have a dozen cupcakes delivered with the inscription "I love you, be my valentine" with "yes" "no" "maybe" cupcakes to be delivered to a lawyer in midtown.

Linda and I emailed back and forth because Linda wanted the card with the cupcakes to be signed "with love, your secret admirer" and Linda wanted to make sure we didn't tell her lawyer valentine that the cupcakes were from her.

We don't generally receive many anonymous cupcake delivery requests but we are romantics at heart and assured her we wouldn't spill the beans.

I personally went to deliver the cupcakes, and normally when delivering to a building in Manhattan someone just comes down to take receipt of the cupcakes and I go on my way.

Not these particular cupcakes.....

The receptionist had security send me up with the delivery. I reach the reception area and the receptionist takes one look at the cupcakes and tells me that they are so cute and that I have to deliver them to the lawyer valentine because he is going to be so surprised.

At this point I am smiling on the outside and cringing on the inside because I know that the whole office is going to know about the cupcakes and may even want to come over and see them while I am still there (this has happened to me before and it's about as comfortable as a job interview lol)

The receptionist walks me back to lawyer valentines office, knocks on his door and tells him he has a delivery and then steps out of the way so-that I can hand him the cupcakes.

I smile and then try to beat a hasty retreat for the door but of course now the cupcake delivery has spread and people are lined up around lawyer valentines door (blocking my escape route)

So he admires the cupcakes and tells me that he has had our cupcakes before and really liked them. He reads the card and laughs and says " I know these are from my fiancé Rebecca* she loves surprising me" he then calls to the receptionist and asks her to get Rebecca.

...... Uhohhhhhhh last time I checked Linda is not a nickname for Rebecca.

I start heading for the door because I smell disaster in the air and I don't want to become part of the collateral damage lol

Unfortunately I get waylaid in the hallway by a lawyer mommy who wants my information so that she can order cupcakes for her daughters 3rd birthday (at this point I have one ear tuned to our conversation and another tuned to the lawyer valentines office and I am trying to calculate just how quickly I can reach the elevators just in case "Linda" isn't short for "Rebecca" and they (or should I say Rebecca) wants to know who exactly ordered those cupcakes.

I begin wrapping it up with lawyer mommy and turn down the hall to make my escape for the elevator when I hear a very loud voice exclaim "What!!! I did NOT order any cupcakes!"

You could have heard a pin drop.... I looked around and all I see are big eyes and open mouths.

I did a quick about face waved at lawyer mommy who was busy catching flies and turned on the afterburners in an attempt to reach the reception area before anyone thought to ask me who ordered the cupcakes since clearly Rebecca did not.

I didn’t take a full deep breath till I cleared the revolving doors at the buildings entrance.

Ohh to have been a fly on the wall to hear the rest of that conversation.....

The Cupcake Chronicles

Hi Luxies!

Welcome to the 1st entry into the cupcake chronicles! We get asked so many questions about us and the business and our customers that we wanted to give you a little backstage (or kitchen) peek into our lives and the funny and bizarre stories that have happened in the lives and times of a cupcakelatier.

So lets go back in time (think 2008 not 1998) to our first flea market experience ever.....

LuxSugar bakery was just a good idea and we were selling baked goods to family members and coworkers and wanted to branch out a little bit and see if actual strangers would buy our cupcakes.

So we decided to buy 4 weekends at a pretty well known flea market in xxx Brooklyn (names and locations have been changed to protect the not so innocent).

We did our research and there was only one other cupcake baker at this flea market that sold a different kind of cupcake both size and flavor selection so we thought that this would be an ideal location for us to introduce our cupcakes.

Well long story short we came we saw we conquered. We happily packed up our empty containers and congratulated ourselves on a job well done.

If only the story ended there lol

Fast forward to the following Friday afternoon at 6pm..... we receive an email from the flea markets organizer and she wrote to tell us that she received complaints about LuxSugar from the other cupcake baker and that we were no longer allowed to bring cupcakes for Saturday's flea market. Furthermore we could have our money back if this was a problem.

WHAT!!! 6 pm Friday night and the cupcakes are already made (think 12 dozen frosted cupcakes)

This was when we realized that not everyone who sells cupcakes is sweet as frosting.

So what did we do? we peeled off the wrappers sliced the cupcakes in half and called them "luxcakes" lol and again it was veni vidi vici because people loved that they could get the frosting on the inside a little cake.

We thought we were in the clear till once again Friday at 6pm we received another email from the flea market organizer again saying that she received more complaints about LuxSugar from the other cupcake baker that our luxcakes were too much like cupcakes (are you seeing a pattern yet?)

So once again we had to scramble...we cut the cupcakes in half and it was still an issue so we decided to dip the cupcakes in frosting and make little cakes (time consuming and highly frustrating).

At the end of the day (or I should say month) we learned a couple of valuable lessons:

Customers loved our stuff
Competitors hated us and our cupcakes
Sometimes being the new cupcake bakery on the scene can be a lot like a freshman playing dodge ball with the senior varsity basketball team- you know they are aiming for you but you don't know where the ball is going to hit you :-)

And no, we never sold cupcakes at that flea market again......

We have been hard at work in the LuxSugar kitchen cranking out cupcakes and all manner of delicious treats but we don't want to neglect you :-) So we are introducing our new weekly blog post called the "Cupcake Chronicles" where we will give you some insight into the good, the bad and sometimes bizarre world of the Cupcakelatier (yes we made that title up).

Our business has had some wild and frequently crazy times and we want to bring you along for the ride, so buckle up and be prepared to laugh and sometimes just puzzle at the shenanigans our little cupcakes get into.*

James Beard & Food Bank NYC Event

LuxSugar cupcakes will be in attendance at the Farm Stand Event at the James Beard House tomorrow. This is a great event and we are excited that our boxed mini cupcakes will be the favor for all the attendees.

The Farm Stand

James Beard Foundation Greens and Food Bank For New York City Young Professionals are joining forces once again for an evening of all things local and sustainable. Guests will sample great food prepared by some of New York City's most talented farm-dedicated chefs and herb- and flower-infused cocktails from master mixologist Junior Merino. Local wines and Stella beers will also be served. Guests will have a chance to win restaurant gift certificates and other prizes as they support two great causes. Funds raised from this event will support both the James Beard Foundation's mission and Food Bank For New York City’s efforts to purchase farm shares from Roxbury Farms so members of their Community Kitchen will have access to fresh fruits and vegetables during the growing season.

LuxSugar hits the high seas!

Hi Luxies :-)

Last Friday LuxSugar hit the high seas with a wedding order for 250 jumbo boxed Lemon Blueberry cupcakes as guest favors and a wedding cake to be delivered to the Lady Windridge yacht.

These cupcakes were for a lovely couple (Theresa and Joseph) who were so super sweet and very in love.

After sampling a few of our flavors Theresa and Joseph created their own unique flavor:

Lemon Blueberry Cupcake with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting

250 jumbo boxed cupcakes and a wedding cake walked the plank on a beautiful summer evening.

Exciting news! LuxSugar Bakery will be the exclusive cupcake vendor at ToyStreet on Friday April 10th. You can learn more about the event here.

The blog is a place to feature women, inspire women, talk about products and projects for women, and just be a place where women can go to be informed of something new and refreshing, whether it be entertainment, music, lifestyle and more.

The first project is titled "The Takeover Twelve" or TTT. Per Georgette the concept behind TTT will be:

...to highlight 12 women who are successful in their respective careers and shine a light on what they do.

We've had a really busy summer, and it's only getting busier!
In the past couple of weeks we've had 3 weddings and today we've received even bigger news!

Our pastry chef, Shari, was featured on the new Pepsi site "We Inspire" by editor Nichelle Stephens (also famously known from Cupcakes Takes the Cake). Check out the other great stories on the site from actresses Taraji Henson and Raven-Symone.

Where We've Been...

Hi Luxies:
It's finally feeling like summertime in NY and we've been busy catering birthday parties and even catered a picnic in Central Park last weekend (see the box of goodies below).

On Saturday night we catered a birthday party at the RoofTop for a good friend and Wendy Williams was also there :-). We just had to introduce ourselves and we also gave Wendy, her husband, Charlemagne and the other members of her party, Lux Bailey's chocolate cupcakes and also Chocolate Truffle topped chocolate cupcakes.

Also we're finally posting the dessert table that we catered for Angela Yee's 1 year Anniversary party for her morning show at Taj Lounge earlier this month.

We haven't had a chance to post any pics of Boulevard Cafe, the only place in BK you can pick up LuxSugar goodies including the newly debuted Lipservice Baileys cupcake.
Boulevard is open 7days a week from 930a-930p and Eric and Esther are the owners. The food is yummy, the coffee is fantastic and the atmosphere...well you should check it out for yourself. Also they are opening the backyard space soon (yayy Spring) and also will begin to serve wine and beer.

We're super excited as NowPublic just asked us to post a picture of the new cupcake: Lipservice (Bailey's Irish Cream cupcake) that we are bringing to LipService later tonight.

Per NowPublic's site:

We recently did a wedding cake for a lovely couple (Ros and Tony) and they are regular readers of our blog and suggested that we do a "behind the scenes" post. We love making our customers happy so we decided to follow their advice and do something a little different, so here goes....

Step 1- Meet sexy 007, he will leave you both shaken and stirred.

Step 2- Cakes are baked and ready..time to roll out the fondant (A LOT of fondant).

Step 3- One down 3 more to go (All cake layers were luscious Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet).

Step 4- Cakes safely transported to the reception venue (whewww it was a lot of cake) and baker begins the assembly process.

Step 5- Create custom cake topper with golden infinity rings and organic fresh flowers.

Step 6- Fantasy Fondant & Flowers cake complete and ready for its photo shoot :-)

A luscious four layer Marilyn Monroe red velvet cake with cream cheese filling; Fondant studded with edible pearl and gold balls, fondant roses, and organic flowers.

And that is how a wedding cake goes from flour to photo shoot in 6 easy steps.

Today, Peggy the P.R. and Marketing Expert from LuxSugar, along with other business women, will be a guest speaker at a workshop for Midtown Community Court discussing how LuxSugar got started, telling others about what we do at LuxSugar, and giving career tips on job hunting & starting your own business.

The Choices programs assists women off the streets and into a job training program. TimesSquare Ink, helps people with criminal backgrounds to get jobs and build new careers.

There is a really cute positive book by Megan Fate and Kimi Fate Gros geared towards young girls that we wanted to share with you all.

It's called Megan Hearts and each series of books are devoted to "helping inspire and empower young girls (ages 5-9) to explore new hobbies and create new goals".

The first one is called Megan Hearts Baking which is of course our specialty here at LuxSugar!

Per the authors:

There is a profound pressure placed on young girls in current day society based on their image: they need to be thin, beautiful and appealing. Instead of looking to serve others, the focus is constantly on "me!" The struggle of peer pressure emerges and girls strive for whatever it takes to be well liked and popular. They fear walking the road less traveled because, to them, it appears to be the lonely road. Girls fear failure. Due to this fear, we often times see far too many girls let life pass them by as they ‘go with the flow.' One will find that as you look back upon your life, the moments that stand out are the ones when you have done things for others. Oftentimes, people forget to think beyond themselves. We have several great events going on this week.

LuxSugar will be participating in the Cupcakes for a Cause Cancer Care for Kids Event which will take place via a bake sale at Mount Vernon High School in Mount Vernon, NY this weekend. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Cancer Care for Kids. We will announce more details this week.

Also on Friday, 10.24.08:

LuxSugar will donate mini-cupcakes to another great event "The Choices for Change Benefit" sponsored by Midtown Community Court - a nonprofit organization in Times Square. The benefit will be hosted by Fox 5 Anchor, Rick Folbaum and will take place at a private lounge at 240 W. 52nd Street from 7:00p - 9:30p.
They will premiere a performance through the Women's Project featuring the voices of program participants and also will they will be holding a top-notch silent auction featuring donated items from the Marriott Marquis and Microsoft.

"Proceeds from the event will help support services for women at the Midtown Community Court. Women served by the Midtown Community Courtparticipate in onsite programs geared to help them escape lives ofprostitution, sexual violence and human trafficking. Celebrating itsfifteenth anniversary, the Midtown Community Court is a public-private entity which seeks to address quality-of-life crime in Manhattan byproviding alternatives to jail and building partnerships between thecourt and the community. Per their website: CancerCare for Kids provides free counseling services to children who are facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis—either their own or that of a parent, sibling or other family member. It's a great event and LuxSugar is very excited to be a part of it.

We are catering a huge Sweet 16 event for a really sweet girl, Briana in NJ on Saturday 9.13.08.
On the Menu: 125 red velvet cupcake as favors and 5 dozen mini's to be displayed on a cupcake tower to match Briana's party colors.

Lux Summer Wrapup 2008

Hi Luxies...
Well summer is almost officially over :-(...but it was a great Lux Summer.
We catered a slew of great parties such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Sephora's Sara Biria, K. Anderson PR, and many many other fun parties.

We also had a great time at all the fleas this summer as we met alot of our great clientele in both Fort Greene and Williamsburg.

Along with the bakers staying busy in the kitchen w/ the numerous orders Lux has been getting, we have been brainstorming on what we will debut this fall...so stay tuned for that announcement.

We wanted to thank Noreylee or as we like to call her, N.O.R.E. (lol) for the great pics she took at the BK flea this summer. Check out the red velvet mini and the halle mini on her flickr account.

We are going to cater a Entourage party on Sunday (one of our fave tv shows) and we will be super busy this weekend with a tasting/consultation for a huge Sweet 16 Birthday Party that will take place this month, and other orders for cakes and other goodies.

Hi Luxies,

We know, we know LuxSugar appears to have neglected you on the blog posts but that is because we have been busy little bees in the kitchen creating new flavors and filling orders. You can view our new pics on Flickr, keyword "LuxSugar".

ANOTHER GREAT SUNDAY AT THE FLEA!

Hi Luxies.

We had a great day today! Not only did we sell out but our new summer flavor debuts: the Banana Crumble mini's, PB&J mini's, Chocolate Chunk cookies and Lemon Bar mini bars were a huuuge success.

LuxSugar also had the GREAT pleasure of meeting one of the greatest models of all time, Alek Wek. Check out her myspace page. Alek went home with a box of LuxSugar goodies for a dinner party she is having tonight. It was one of those great BK Flea celeb sightings! Especially at the LuxSugar Booth.

We will be debuting more summer flavors next week, so come back and see what's on the menu.
